Dyson vacuum cleaners are some of the most sophisticated on the market for consumers today. James Dyson, the founder and inventor of these revolutionary vacuums, was inspired to begin designing vacuum cleaners after he grew frustrated that no vacuum he bought could maintain suction – even expensive models. He found that the bags were clogging with dust, preventing air from passing through and thus diminishing suction. Since the bag itself was the problem, he developed the first bagless vacuum.
The secret behind the bagless design is the cyclonic action: particles of dust and dirt are carried into the vacuum with air, just like any other vacuum cleaner, but in a Dyson vacuum cleaner the air is spun through a series of cyclonic tubes, accelerating the speed of the air and forcing the dirt and dust out of the air stream with centrifugal force. Dirt and dust collides with the sides and falls into the dust bin for collection. Also, to further improve performance, the engine is mounted inside the ball itself. This keeps the vacuum cleaner’s center of gravity very close to the floor, and prevents the ball from “getting away from” the user. Vacuum cleaners are an absolute household necessity, but have until recently been woefully underpowered and difficult to maneuver.
